- One of the things that we really wanted to emphasize when we did our American Heart Association scientific statement on post-stroke depression a few years ago, is that it's not enough just to screen for depression. Practitioners need to have the ability to treat as well. So you need to screen and treat. I think we need more information on what the risk factors are for depression after stroke. And what's contributing to the apparent increase in risk amongst women. Some hypotheses in the past have been that women, particularly older women are more likely to live alone after stroke. They tend to have longer survival rates and so, than men. And so they may be alone and have less social support, that needs to be further characterized. And we need to do more to kind of mitigate the risk of depression after stroke.
