- There's a long story behind this peptide, this nerinetide peptide. And they mentioned the investigators do, in their abstract, the escape in a one trial, which was the trial that tested it in a phase three trial in humans. The trial failed to find a benefit for the primary outcome. So treating all comers of patients with an acute ischemic stroke with this drug, in combination with intravenous tPA failed to show benefit. But when they looked at subgroups, and this was a pre-specified analysis, so it gives it some external validity. In a pre-specified secondary analysis, they split out those patients that got IV tPA and nerinetide, and then did not get IV tPA because of some contraindication to the drug, but they did get nerinetide. And it was a substantial number in that second group. And that group appeared to show a very significant benefit. And that caused them to go back and look at the drug. And it turns out that when you give nerinetide and tPA at the same time, the tPA cleaves the nerinetide. It slices it up so that it doesn't work. And they didn't know that before.
